1940 Chevrolet RCAF Staff Car

Our 1940 Chevrolet served as a Staff Car during the Second World War, and it still runs today! This car was the staff car right here at #12 Service Flying Training School, Brandon. Staff Cars, such as this one, were used for various purposes at RCAF bases and other installations, perhaps taking the base commander to a meeting and so on.

The standard engine on a 1940 Chevy was a 216.5 cubic inch in-line 6 cylinder which provided 85 horsepower. A 1940 ad for the car gives a base price of $659!

After the war, the car was sold to the A.M. Dunham family of Brandon, who kept it until it was donated to the museum.  The time Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School’s automotive class restored and painted the car bringing it to the condition you see here. The project was made possible through the Manitoba Heritage Federation Inc. Museum volunteers also replaced its suspension, drive-train, brakes and engine. It is now in operating condition.

Our staff car appeared in the 1993 movie “For the Moment” which starred a young Russell Crowe.
